Letting Go of Clutter: Effective Strategies for Making Decisions During a Garage Cleanout

August 9, 2023

Have you noticed these days how many cars are parked on the street or in the driveway instead of parked in the garage? Everyone has so much stuff they can’t fit it all in their house and so it spills out into the garage to be dealt with later – much later!

If you are one of the many people that’s starting to feel the pull to take a good look at the items in your home and garage and really start decluttering, we have some great strategies to help you. The garage cleanout you’ve been wanting for months or maybe even years is yours for the taking.

Create a Plan for Your Garage Cleanout

You’ve probably been putting off your garage cleanout for some time now. It can be incredibly overwhelming to go through your garage storage which includes holiday decorations, sports equipment, kids’ old junk, tools, and all the other things you haven’t wanted to deal with. If “just put it in the garage” has become your “go-to”, it’s time to make a change and begin planning for your garage cleanout in New Jersey.

Plan for a day when you have plenty of time, good weather, and some help to make decisions while tackling your messy garage. A garage cleanout is not an individual sport. You need all the help you can get!

One good garage cleanout idea to help you get started is to remove everything out of your garage and put it in your driveway and/or yard. It can seem like you’re just taking one mess and moving it to another place but as you move it you will come across things that are obviously garbage or ready for charity. Get those things in a pile so you don’t have to think about them again. If you’re not sure about something, don’t take the time right now to make hard decisions– just get everything out of the garage.

Now that your garage is empty, you can take the time to pressure wash your garage floor or simply sweep and wipe down your garage space. Grab your hose to help you out and get all that dust and grime out of there. There’s nothing quite like a deep clean for the garage!

Make Keep, Donate, Garbage Piles for Your Stuff

Now that you have everything out of the garage, you can start to go through each pile. Make a keep pile, a donate pile, and a garbage pile. This gives you an easy and fast way to make decisions as you sort through each item and assess what to do with it.

As you go through the items during your garage cleanout, you’ll probably come across things you forgot you even had. You obviously haven’t been using those objects so do your best to get rid of the things you don’t need and that you haven’t been using. If you have tons of sporting goods but know you’ll never use them, give them to your kids or grandkids to use instead.

When you come across items that have been broken or that you have been meaning to fix for some time now, consider tossing them. Things like bug sprays, old paint, and even mechanical supplies may not be good anymore and need to be disposed of properly. Don’t hold onto these kinds of things any longer. Put them in garbage bags and don’t look back.

Get Organized

Now that you’ve gone through things and have condensed what will remain in your garage storage, it’s time to get organized and really make this garage cleanout happen! What space do you have on your garage wall? Could you better utilize that space by installing wire shelves to get more organized? How about grouping items in plastic bins to keep things together and contained? Make it easy to find your tools, gardening supplies, sports equipment, and more. Keep in mind, even when you’re at the organizing stage, you can still get rid of things and declutter items that you have too many of or don’t think you need any longer.

It may be easiest to start with the largest items first. Make sure you have room for your car if that’s your goal. Maybe you need a freezer in your garage, as well as space for your BBQ. Once those big items are in place, you can add the small things around them.
