Did you know, according to the East Hanover township website, European settlers bought several thousand acres from the native Unami in 1708. In addition to cash, the Unami received barter including 15 kettles, 20 axes, 20 hoes, 10 duffel blankets, half a barrel of wine, a barrel of rum, a barrel of cider, three files, a gun bore, an auger, 4 pistols, 4 cutlasses, 10 guns, 100 bars of lead, 20 shirts and 100 knives.

East Hanover was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1928, from portions of Hanover Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 9, 1928, that split off both East Hanover Township and Parsippany-Troy Hills from Hanover Township.

Why are the taxes lower in East Hanover than some surrounding areas? This is largely a result the retail stores along State Route 10 – Costco, Marshalls, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Home Depot, Party City, Target, Michaels, Bed Bath and Beyond, among others, plus the bowling alley, the chain restaurants and the presence of Novartis, the pharmaceutical company, and Mondelez International, formerly Kraft, that have helped keep taxes low.
